The Ranch is located in Northwest Georgia a’top Lookout Mountain, where Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee come together. We are 45 miles South of Chattanooga, 100 miles Northwest of Atlanta and 120 miles Northeast of Birmingham. We are surrounded by the enchanting forests and natural beauty of Ancient Appalachia. At an altitude of 1,800 feet, we enjoy warm days and cool nights, and plenty of healthy mountain breezes.

The Ranch is a vast private domain. Our 600 acres is a peninsula off Lookout Mountain with Jones Gulf on the West and North perimeters. The Chattanooga Valley is to the East and offers our panoramic “valley view,” looking into the daily sunrise or the full moonrise. The two-mile private drive into the ranch is remote enough from civilization to offer all the possibilities of real ranch living with privacy and security. Valley View is a year-round working ranch, seasonally rotating our horses and pastures to produce the hay which sustains our herd throughout the off-season.

Since 1948, Jack & Olive Jones operated Camp Cloudmont for boys in Mentone, Alabama. In 1954 they bought this scenic cattle farm and named it Valley View Ranch. Their dream was to build an equestrian camp for their daughters. Nancy, Marsha, Janis, and Angela grew up and helped develop the riding programs with their varied equine interests. In 1970, after graduating college and a lifetime of apprenticeship, Nancy took over and is now the Owner and Director. Marsha and Janis help manage Cloudmont Golf & Ski Resort in nearby Mentone, Alabama, with the rest of the Jones family. Angela runs Lookout Mountain Preferred Realty. Janis’ daughter, Chelsea Manning, is Assistant Director and Office Manager of Valley View Ranch since completing her business degree. Her experience started as a papoose on her mother’s back while Janis was teaching rodeo classes. She now totes her two young children around the ranch in much the same way. Marsha’s son, Doug Hair Jr., is the Hay Farm Manager and Head of Ranch Maintenance. Barbara “Bo” Clark has been here since 1975, coordinating all riding programs and horse assignments. Our Program Director, Lara Calloway, began as a Valley View summer camper when she was just 10 years old. After graduating college in 2008, Lara has been helpful here year round. Three generations of horse lovers manage Valley View Ranch!

Almost all of our staff members are young women who have grown up attending Valley View in the summers. They return year after year to pass their love and interest in our program on to the next generation! Only women of high ideals, strength of personality, and integrity of character are chosen as counselors. Our experienced counselors soon become not only the campers’ mentor, but also their big sister and best friend. Naturally, the counselor who spends time with a group of girls has the opportunity to become well acquainted with each one individually and as a group. She gains the friendship, admiration, and confidence of each girl and is therefore able, by example and advice, to encourage self-assurance and help overcome possible weaknesses. Counselors live in the cabins alongside the campers, and counselor to camper ratio is 1:5, with one counselor and no more than five campers on each side of a bunkhouse.

The staff at Valley View Ranch is thoroughly organized, each being in charge of the various divisions of riding instruction and recreational activities. The staff takes considerable pride in the fact that each girl participates in all riding activities of the ranch program. This is accomplished through special, individual attention and shared enthusiasm. The ranch leaders do a splendid job in securing the hearty cooperation of every girl.
